Manggae-tteok (Sweet Rice Cake)

I don’t remember exactly, but it must have been a chilly early winter night in the late 1970s. In a narrow alley of Yangbuk-myeon, Gyeongsangbuk-do, my mom, dad, and I sat together in our tiny semi-basement room with a single window near the ceiling, trying to stay warm by the fire.

From the alley above came the familiar call, “Manggae~tteok!” Feeling a bit hungry and wanting a treat, my mom opened the dusty little window. In an instant, we exchanged a small bag of manggae-tteok—a sweet, chewy rice cake—and some money, though I can’t remember whether it was coins or bills.

I still remember being that seven-year-old, tasting the sticky sweetness with my mom and dad, feeling the warmth of both the fire and their presence. Even now, that little moment lingers in my memory.
